Ninety-two percent of the students who live in the community where I teach live below the poverty level. Transitioning to virtual learning has been a hardship for most families as many parents have lost their jobs and are surviving on much smaller incomes than they were before.
Some families have no access to internet, and affordable laptops have become scarce, making buying a device like a Chromebook a luxury many families cannot afford, especially if there are multiple children in the family.
My students are motivated to work hard and want to make the most out of their virtual learning opportunity, but not having the proper tools to do so makes this difficult. Putting the right tools at their disposal will ensure that the virtual learning gap will not add to the obstacles these students already face during this unprecedented time.
