Students at my school are able to check books out at the library, but the selection of books with their favorite songs and with musical information is limited. We do a lot of singing in our music class with books, as well as playing instruments with books too. Students can create Orff accompaniments as well as songs to go along with the story, or practice concepts with the story as well. I see students twice a week for 30 minutes at a time. Why should the learning and love for music stop in my music room?
Students need to be able to check out musical books, bring them home, and sit down with family to foster meaningful musical conversation, sing-alongs, and create a family appreciation for the art form.
By sharing their love of music with their family, and sharing what they have learned, students feel a sense of pride and ownership in themselves, and relationships with family members grow stronger. It helps to build community and gives parents more involvement in their child's education. Music should not just happen in music class, it belongs everywhere and to everyone!
