My students are all young women, between the ages of 11 and 13, but our school teaches about 900 students from grades 6 through 12. Our school is an inspiring place, full of students who are motivated by their learning and cared for by every person in this building. We focus on teaching leadership skills to our students and teach using interdisciplinary, project-based strategies. 75% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, but 100% of our graduating seniors last year were accepted to college! Our students are curious, happy, appreciated and appreciative. We encourage them to express their opinions, create beauty with meaningful work products and service projects, and to work together. I have seen in this year’s middle school students growth not only in their skills, but their ways of speaking, their confidence and their ways of cross-applying skills and creativity across many disciplines.
