As a high school English teacher, the most common struggle is that students say they HATE reading. When I ask why I am mostly met with the same answer: 鈥淚t鈥檚 boring!鈥 or 鈥淚 don鈥檛 relate to it!鈥 And they are right. How do my diverse students, from a low socio-economic neighborhood, have any relation to stories about rich, white characters? They don鈥檛.
Students should be able to open a book and feel like their experiences are being mirrored. I want my classroom library to be full of diverse stories from diverse authors. Students should feel represented in the books they read: from their race, culture, gender, sexuality, immigration status, and so many other experiences.
