My school San Francisco International High School has over 390 students speaking more than a dozen languages. Of our student population, most are very recent arrivals to the U.S. Of our student population, 98% are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 35% come to us with interrupted formal education having been in refugee camps, detention centers, or coming from countries that were not able to offer regular schooling.
Not only do we prepare our students to be college and career ready by making English proficiency a central goal for all students, but we also want students to be fully computer literate. However, our school currently only has 25 outdated laptops and 25 equally outdated desktops to serve our 390 students. This means that students in my classroom frequently do not have access to computers when they need them.
