Many times students are limited to reading novels in the classroom, borrowing a class set of books that they do not feel ownership of in order to complete their assignments. If each student is given an individual novel, students will claim their novel as theirs; learn how to annotate author's craft, character development, and theme; and be able to complete their analysis on their own time at home, after practice, and around the city. 9th grade success is a huge determinant of success in 11th grade and beyond high school. I want my 9th graders to feel the agency and ownership of their education (especially when reading!) in a way we often exclusively attribute to upperclassmen. I know my students can get there--they just need the resources to do it.
