My students are fourth and fifth graders in a tiny school with an even tinier budget. Many are English learners and almost all qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite the challenges they face growing up in a high poverty neighborhood, my students come to school eager to learn and hungry for knowledge. As part of the school family, they are expected to always play an active role in their own learning. In return, our staff strives to provide for them as many of the opportunities their counterparts in wealthier communities enjoy as we can.
As budgets have dwindled, this has become increasingly difficult, but we persevere because this is the promise we have made to our students. The school family is proud to have been recognized as both a Title I Achieving School and a California Distinguished School. These awards serve as evidence that when given the opportunity and the support they need, our students can and will rise to meet our expectations.
