My students are primarily African American, and belong to a school that celebrates their culture and ancestry. We try to bring the seven Kwanzaa principles (Nguzo Saba), including ideas such as unity (umoja) and purpose (nia), into our everyday routines in the classrooms. I believe that this helps my students create their own identity not only within our school, but in their homes and community. As Kindergarteners, my students are a busy bunch with a love and curiosity for learning that is irreplaceable. As a teacher, I try my hardest to make sure that curiosity doesn't falter, and do so by finding creative ways to involve them in their learning in a hands-on manner.
