I insist that students start reading to self for 10 minutes, without stopping, on day 1. From there, we increase the number of minutes gradually. I expect them to repeat the process at home as well. It is imperative that they begin to build their stamina for sustained tasking, so they can be prepared for increasing expectations, studying, and testing. Most students come to me at least three years below grade level, so they need to work on the basics, such as staying on task for a set period of time. Giving focus and effort will help them build a love a literacy and increase their vocabulary as well as many positive outcomes. Plus it will help to soothe them, especially with high rates of trauma, poverty, and learning concerns. Everyone can be successful with this. Everyone can take ownership and feel a sense of achievement.
