My students are all 10th graders and have never had their own personal novel nor have they ever read a book from beginning to end. A normal reading experience for them included an excerpt from the text that was photo copied and given to them. As an educator, I have learned that learners thrive when they are able to make a personal connection to the environment. I believe it is important for my students to have a novel of their own so that they may have a personal connections and most of all so that they can experience meaningful annotations/ notes that are tailored to their learning style.
I spoke about this opportunity with my students and their response was, "Ms Robinson we've never had anyone care enough to do that for us." That made me feel complete, that I have the opportunity to expose my students to something new; most of all I have the opportunity to expose them to college level thinking. I want my students to thrive and make connections to like and education, that is why I chose this specific novel. These children have been through so much in their lives, they can relate to every character in the novel. I am 100% sure my students would be grateful for the books and this will be a classroom experience they will never forget.
