Our classroom is slated to be ever-changing according to student requests. In their surveys, the students gave details about how they envisioned the BEST classroom.
This year there has been an overwhelming amount of requests for a reading center. The students would like to have their own space in the classroom to hang out and be less formal.
We have a separate area of the classroom which has a nook where they can sit on the rug or on a back jack while reading their latest favorite novel. The nautical and world map pillows and small ship lanterns will provide a more home-like atmosphere so the students will feel comfortable and want to use the area on a daily basis. Individual book lamps will help students see the pages they are steering their way through. And with counter-top bookcases, students can easily manage the center themselves. The marine and boat decorations will enhance visual interest and help our reading center feel unique to our room. Although they enjoy the library, the students would prefer to cozy up to books in our classroom.
Since our mascot is the mariners, it is only fitting that we would like to create a mariner-themed reading center for everyone to enjoy!
