I have seven beautiful boxes in my classroom, one for each continent, that include treasures specific to each continent. A few were purchased by me during travels but most were donated by friends and parents. In these boxes, the children are allowed to touch and feel the treasures, read books, and look at photos from each continent, with the intention that each child will make individual sensorial discoveries about the people who live on different continents and learn to appreciate the wonder found in the similarities and differences around the world. Listening to music from cultures found on each continent will allow the children an opportunity to experience more intimately what their peers in another part of the world hear through musical instruments and song. The headphones and this specific mp3 player together have volume controls that I set and the child can listen on their own. Each continent box will hold its own mp3 player with music specific to that continent.
This project will have a broad impact on my students because adding culturally specific music to their overall sensorial experience will enhance their appreciation and respect for all humans.
Imagine how wonderful it would be to look at photos, read a book, and touch artifacts from a continent as you listen to their native music! The combined experience will help them develop an understanding that as members of the human race we must co-exist peacefully in order to survive.
