We need to be proactive about teaching the next generation to be accepting of everybody, no matter their skin tone, culture, or ethnicity. Books are a great way to start the dialogue and to expose children to new points of view.
These stories would allow them to see both themselves and other children of color in a positive light. As an adult, I can still remember the impact of seeing a Japanese American character in my elementary school grade text book. I hope to give my students representation that I craved as well as representation for other marginalized communities.
Distance learning has really affected my students' social emotional well being. Reading these stories together over Google Meet will be a great way to connect as a class while also learning to be kind, accepting human beings.
