My students attend a small, rural school in a very low income/high poverty area of Mississippi, and they have been faced with a severe lack of resources throughout their education. To put it in perspective, the nearest Wal-Mart is 25 minutes away.
However, they are highly creative when given opportunity, and my class is a respite from test-driven academics for them to explore this creativity.
I have been tasked with building the theatre program at our school. My theatre arts class is one of the only fine arts classes at our school, and it is important that it be a safehaven for creative and performing arts.
At our school, 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students may not have experienced live theatre or spoken word poetry before. As their teacher, I would love to give them these experiences through reading, guest artists, technology and virtual field trips.
