We are a 7th Grade English class in a STEAM program in Los Angeles. We emphasize project based learning and design thinking practices. Each semester we have a interdisciplinary project with the students that involves English, Math, History, and Science content knowledge. This project always includes a public product (such as a city model or a mock trial performance).
In our English classroom students use Chromebooks to develop and support necessary 21st Century Skills. These skills include communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. These are skills they are required to learn as they go forward into their adult lives (in college and in their future workplaces).
We also encourage social emotional growth by including a social justice element in our classroom activities. My hope is for the kids to leave my classroom as active participants and informed citizens.
