This is my fifth year as the teacher librarian of historic Abraham Lincoln High School in Lincoln Heights, an underprivileged, but developing area of Los Angeles County.
Our student body is made up of immigrant and first generation Hispanic and Asian families. The school is split into four small learning communities and two magnet schools. Within these thematic SLCs and magnets, our students develop a sense of belonging to a team and working toward a common goal.
Our school is very college-oriented. In fact, one of our requirements for graduation is applying to college, any college, including community college. Not all our students are college-bound, but we do encourage everyone to explore that option.
My library provides our students with a safe space to explore, learn, grow, and be themselves. I strive to create the same kind of dependable environment that I counted on from the library when I was growing up.
