These materials are so important for my students. Because they fall well-below grade level, they need "hi-low" books. These are books that have engaging topics and content. They are not going to offend or make middle school students feel incompetent with books that appear "babyish." However, they are low enough where the kids will feel autonomous and capable of reading- something they have gone too long without. After a shared reading lesson with 6th/7th grade texts, my students will be given the opportunity to go and find books on their level that they can practice applying skills/strategies modeled in shared reading but on an independent level.
