Our school is a large urban high school that services approximately 3,300 students from every economic, social, and ethnic background imaginable. Over 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and many cannot even afford basic school supplies. Despite economic hardship, the students in the journalism program have developed a passion for expression through writing, art, pictures, and technology.
My students use this passion to create an award-winning newspaper. They have accomplished so much with their writing and now their focus is on the visual representation of their work. In order to succeed in this visual society, they want and need to incorporate interesting graphic and photographic elements into the overall design of the newspaper on our new on-line publication.
