We have a diverse group of incoming 7th graders that are eager to learn about different cultural groups and the underlying social justice issues that our nation is currently facing. Ninety-seven percent of our student population qualifies as low income and many lack the technological resources, including computers and internet, that will allow them to thrive academically in a COVID-19 e-learning environment.
Providing our students with a physical copy of this graphic novel will alleviate this obstacle, and will provide them with the tools they need to be empowered, and academically successful adolescents!
We would like to start the school year with a graphic novel in order to reach all of our students, while simultaneously inspiring them to be active readers and foster an interest and love for reading. This would be a great opportunity for students to walk away from their computer screen and instead take enjoyment in having a physical book in their hand to read and annotate. Studies have shown that having a physical book increases students comprehension and increases the likelihood that they will continue to read in the future.
