Students can't learn if they're hungry. If the lower levels of Maslow's Hierarchy are not met, then the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy are impossible. My students are credit deficient, mostly due to traumatic events that have happened in their lives. They are struggling to move up Maslow's Hierarchy daily; I'd like to help them skip the hunger portion every day. They come to my reduced credit program to catch up and get some personalized attention without the pressure and distraction of the comprehensive high school. Sometimes they're too late for the school breakfast, and if they do make it here on time, it is often just cereal and not very nutritious or filling. When I asked them what kind of things they wanted as PBIS rewards, they all wanted snacks, food, and clothing. I'm hoping to start a non-perishable food pantry, a grab & go station, so they know there's one thing they don't have to worry about. I will personally provide a water kettle for boiling water to prepare the oatmeal, ramen cups, and mac & cheese.
