At our high school, our musically interested students for the first time will be able to join a band. Bell kits (with snare practice pads and mallets), cymbals, and a bass drum mallet will provide the opportunity for the kids to play real percussion instruments in the classroom. This provides them with the idea of steady beat and rhythmic support in an ensemble and it also helps to build the self-esteem that they need. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent projects to build musicianship.
This will not only give students in band instruments to play, but allow all students to experience percussion sounds as they analyse and compose their own music. Furthermore, we will be able to travel with these and allow for students to practice their talents at home. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but hopefully allow students to play concerts for family, friends, and the community.
