For my students, being able to feel success is paramount. Many of them have 504s, IEPs and different situations that make it hard for them to learn in a traditional classroom. I want my space to be a class where they can feel success by being able to move and learn at the same time. In order for this to happen we need some alternative seating and equipment that allows students to move and fidget all while sitting at their desks.
My goal is always to get them outside and working in the community, but sometimes we have to be in the class, learning the skills they will need for a successful future. We frequently have speakers come in to talk about careers, financial literacy, and volunteer opportunities. This means sitting still for longer periods of time.
In our request we have included under the table foot pedals that will allow students to be moving their feet while remaining seated. There are also fidget cushions and foot bands for chairs. Both of those items have been recommended by the Occupational Therapist to help students be able to fidget while sitting in their chair. The final items we have included are bean bag shares which are for a students to have a quiet and relaxing area for students to learn when they are having difficult day.
My students are absolutely phenomenal kids. They are the types of kids that make me a better person. This is just a small way to give back to them.
