Students within my classroom are three to five years of age. Developmentally at this age, it is appropriate for children to practice sitting on the floor to help core strength and increase engagement. Currently, I use wooden chairs in my classroom during circle, yet inclusion classrooms within my school have students sitting on the floor. My students have difficulty generalizing skills within various environments. It would be beneficial for my students to practice this skill of sitting on the floor within my classroom prior to being included to be successful.
These comfy floor seats allow students to have structure with the backing of the chair, yet be on the floor, which research shows it most appropriate.
Across the school day, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies. Alternative seating will help to ensure that each student's physical needs are met through floor chairs that have support.
