My students are Deaf and Hard of Hearing grades 9-12. Their first language is often American Sign Language (ASL), or they are limited language proficient. We have a self-contained classroom on a regular education campus. Several students are mainstreamed for content areas, but remain in our classroom for English Language Arts, since this is a common deficit. I expose my students to authentic use of the English language in print while exploring topics and building higher level thinking skills in ASL. Thus, English is taught as a second language within my classroom.
