The students at our school are curious and ready to learn; they come from a variety of backgrounds, culturally and economically. Because of these differences, we strive to create a school environment of acceptance and awareness. I teach at an elementary school in the Bronx. My school is a Title I school where more than 90% of the students get free and reduced price lunch. The community is a low socioeconomic area, and the budget of the school does not allow for us to be able to buy new supplies. Most of these students come from broken homes, and are poverty stricken. The school is in the top 5 poorest areas in the United States. Many families live in shelters across the city and travel a great distance to get their child to school.
