As the sole social worker at a large, urban school, one way I support teachers and students is by teaching lessons relating to emotional management, friendship skills, and problem-solving. At the same time, I incorporate lessons that help to develop characteristics such as compassion and empathy.
Read-alouds are an essential component of my lessons; for children books can be a magical bridge to helping with all kinds of life challenges, mental health struggles, and more. After a year of distance-school, social-emotional learning is more important than ever as children navigate friendships and the big emotions that are a part of their growth and learning.
