My students are from impoverished neighborhoods that survive on community and one another for daily needs. They are willing to stand in lines to obtain a meal for their childs breakfast or lunch. They are appreciative of notebook and writing tools being donated. They may not have many monetary things but they do have pride in self and a willingness to learn to improve their lives.
Many of them are from monolingual homes speaking other than English. This is not a deterant for them it is an incentive to overcome the language obstacle. I am the English Language Learner teacher in our grade level and witness first hand how hard these children work to obtain the English language.
They are the students who always smile and try harder when the journey to learn seems long and out of reach. They follow guidance and reach out further to achieve their learning goals.
I am extremely proud to work with these students
