I teach art to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a rural northeastern Arizona junior high school. My classes are made up of children with a wide range of art exposure, ability, and interests. My goal is to help students express themselves through art by exposing them to a new forms of artistic creation.
In my class, students experience a safe place to share their thoughts, feelings, and interests through artistic expression.
Students in my school want their voices to be heard. They are in a phase of their young lives where it is difficult to talk about the opinions, beliefs, and struggles they are experiencing. Students in my class learn to express themselves visually using many different forms of art and, in doing so, often learn that they are not alone.
I love seeing the sense of pride and accomplishment that a student experiences when they are able to create art that speaks to their classmates!
