Why teach ukelele in the music classroom? Ukeleles can be used to teach various musical concepts (rhythm, pitch, harmony, chord structure and progression and others) including those listed in the National Standards for Music Education. Ukelele is both a solo and ensemble instrument that can be mastered by students of differing ages and abilities.
Growing in popularity in general music programs across the country, these instruments are relatively inexpensive and portable, therefore, ukeleles are potentially accessible to ALL students. It is this teacher’s hope that students who learn ukelele basics in class will be inspired to continue to learn and will benefit from their appreciation for music even outside of class.
