At our public elementary school, the students come from a broad ethnic background. Over the years, we have tried a variety of problem solving programs, but they all lacked the creativity and innovation that Lego challenges will bring. We are bringing the students together in a club format to work as teams and compete in a variety of problem solving challenges. Our goal is to work on developing a risk-taking attitude toward problem solving in both math and science, while creating a fun, collaborative environment. Our data has shown that across all grade levels K-5, our students are proficient with typical, base-level problem solving, but they don't go beyond this to seek other options/answers. We aim to give them real-world challenges of developing products and solutions that they have to plan and develop both as a small team and individually, depending on the challenge. We want to highlight the creativity and innovation that we know they have!
