Our classroom is full of students with diverse languages, families, and experiences. In order to fully engage students in literacy, I need to provide high quality children's literature that represents who they are and what their family looks, sounds, and feels like.
Students need to read literature that serves as mirrors, reflections of who they are, and windows, the gift of peeking into into another person's experience. These stories build empathy for other members within our learning community and beyond. In addition, multicultural children's stories provide validation and affirmation for stories and experiences that may be underrepresented. These stories provide invaluable experiences for students that will stay with them beyond third grade.
