The newcomer students in our class are learning the basic foundations of the English language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The class is split into five reading groups for differentiated instruction. Providing a listening center would help all students have more opportunities to hear expressive reading along with fluent English speaking, and further develop their vocabulary. The center allows for up to eight students to be following along in a text as it is read to them at the same time. Listening centers would help enhance all aspects of English language development!
My students are so excited to learn English and learn how to read. A listening center and read-along books would also help provide them with an opportunity to engage in texts in a different way. Listening to books allow for students to see how words on a page can come alive and how pleasurable reading can be. I seek to provide my students with many structured opportunities to engage in texts to further excite them about being fluent readers!
