I am a Speech-Language Pathologist working in Early Interventon and Autism Evaluation. I go into homes and support families of children with little or no functional communication. Many of these children come from low socio-economic households with few resources for activities that promote communication growth in their children. First I try to get buy-in for my services. To do this, I offer to lend them toys with each visit. They are then more apt to keep the first appointments. When I can show them how they can be successful playing with their children, engaging in back and forth play that promotes communication, they will become my partner in working with their children. They will be less apt to automatically use screen time with their children. I need copies of toys I already have so that I can lend them out to the many families that I serve. Once I have that buy-in, the progress their children make is remarkable!
