My students are middle schoolers who attend their neighborhood public school. The school is in a predominantly low income area in the city. There is a lot of gang violence and drug activity in the area, but most of the students in our school want nothing to do with that lifestyle. Many students have expressed a desire to be successful in life and to move out of this neighborhood. What they don't realize is that every factor in their lives, whether positive or negative, help shape who they are and who they will become.
There are many murals in this particular neighborhood, which I believe, teach the students to appreciate art. Many students love coming to art class and are very talented. They love learning about new artists, the artists lives, and how each artist's story plays a major role in their paintings. They seem to really identify with artists who have dealt with struggles or unfortunate circumstances, similar to their own lives.
