My fifth grade students are required to read across all genres, and in the process we have stumbled across a topic that is prevalent in our community; social injustice.
The novel Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes, will give these students an opportunity to see themselves as a character in the novel today, as well as learn about racial discrimination in the past.
We plan to read this novel to highlight/educate students on how social injustice can impact their current and future lives, self image, and perception by public service workers.
The desired outcome of reading the novel is to create deeper conversations about the student's experiences, their home life, and hope for the future.
