My fourth grade scholars will change the world. They will attend college and become immigration lawyers, fashion designers, soccer players, and doctors. They realize how their families work to raise them in the U.S. In TN, we have a diversity of cultures. My class includes English Learners from Mexico, Iraq, and Egypt. Twenty one out of my twenty two scholars are on free and reduced lunch. Our school is Title I and our classroom resides outside in a portable. My students are often exposed to violence. However, their economic status will not determine their futures.
Together, they voted for our class motto to be 鈥淩each our Goals.鈥 Daily, they prove their dedication to our mission. They stay inside during lunch to write. Students ask for extra homework. They come Sundays for tutoring and seek out work for breaks. They devour non-fiction and readily recall facts from their books. Never could I have imagined fourth graders on a greater academic mission for their own success.
