I am currently a Preschool teacher in a city school district with students that come to me having limited resources, and families struggling to meet their daily needs. Seventy-nine percent of the students within our district receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch daily.
Our students are coming from lower socio-economic status and their families are doing their best to provide the basic necessities and cannot afford things such as school supplies, art supplies, and books to begin to foster their creativity and love of learning.
Within my classroom, I also work with students that have increasing academic needs and need more individualized instruction in order to be successful. These students, as young as preschool, can be on individualized education plans (IEP's) and require material to be taught in a specific manner and in a variety of ways.
