My school is in a high poverty city, where many students are happy to come to school just to be guaranteed a meal. Many do not see school as a place to get an education. Most of my 23 kids are struggling in reading, coming to third grade on k-1 grade reading levels. I have tried my best to motivate and inspire my students and make them believe that education is freedom. We have worked hard to set rules and high expectations for our "crew" and have even welcomed two guinea pigs into our crew. These guinea pigs have taught students compassion and responsibility, and have created a calmness in the classroom that's remarkable. The kids have made an amazing connection with our class pets, many of my students never had a pet so its a new experience for them altogether.
