My ~50 first grade students are all learning English in school. I work with their classroom teachers to provide them with the language they need to participate and grow, academically and socially. My students come from homes where they speak Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Vietnamese, Khmer, Nepali, and Luganda. Our school population is high-need, with over 88% of students living in poverty. What my students need at school is a place they feel safe, loved, have achievable goals, and are supported by resources.
