My students are amazing little learners. Many come in not even knowing how to write their name, but at the end of the year are able to read books and write multiple sentences. I'm at a Title I school which has over 75% of our students on free and reduced lunch. We lack background knowledge upon our entry into Kindergarten and this is their first time in a school setting.
