My students need to be exposed to literacy across the curriculum and the ability to feel better prepared for their middle school transition. The class will provide students with a service learning component and develop healthy habits for future success.
The population we service are high achieving but come from high poverty. Although the staff and faculty devise creative ways for students to access the curriculum, we struggle with lower reading scores and limited parental involvement. We strive to meet the needs of our students with the allotted resources derived from declining funding and community stakeholders. Based on data, we believe the early implementation of essential skills such as reading better prepares students for their future endeavors. Also, we believe our students are never too young to acquire a compassion for those who may be less fortunate. It’s our civil duty to cultivate the whole child and expose them to various experiences despite their circumstances.
