Some say "The kitchen is the heart of the home". The kitchen table serves as the place where family comes together to not only share a meal, but to share about their day and often celebrate accomplishments. While my students will always be the heart of my classroom, a large classroom rug in an elementary classroom serves as a common ground for young students. The rug is where my students come together to greet each other with a fist bump, handshake, hug, or high-five in the mornings; it's where we come to solve problems, read stories that take us places, dream, learn, share, celebrate accomplishments, dance, and take brain-breaks together. We recently had to get rid of our classroom rug because it received too much love and was wearing so thin that it would slide all over the floor. A new, quality rug would give us our common ground back. While it may seem like just a rug to some, in our eyes it's not your ordinary rug. It's our special meeting place; a place where we can sit close together in our classroom and continue to strive to be the best that we can be.
