Currently I am a mathematics teacher in lower Manhattan. Out of the students in my school, 5% are Asian, 26% are Black, 62% are Hispanic, and 5% are White. Six percent of our students are considered to be English Language Learners (ELLs). Twenty-one percent of our students are considered to be Students with Special Needs. Because the school is located in lower Manhattan, we have students who commute from Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Most of the students in my school are from middle to lower class families. Although our students face many adversities, they are extremely dedicated to their education.
