My young students have started this school year learning entirely online. Most are working indoors, from home or local access centers, with little structured opportunities to go outdoors and safely explore nature. I am a fierce advocate of getting young students outdoors and developing their appreciation of nature by having them garden, learn the names of plants and trees, etc. But no activity is more exciting, I have found, for young students than to learn about birds in their backyards or public parks/gardens. The thrill students experience when they can identify a bird, in a variety of ways, is like no other.
Armed with this special birdwatching book full of poetry, gorgeous illustrations, detailed information about birds, and compatible with an app for students to listen to how various birds sound, students can begin a safe journey of exploration that gets them out of the house and into wonders of nature. Birdwatching is that majestic and nurtures a child’s love of nature and hopefully their desire to protect it. Of course, students will need their handy binoculars to see up close the magnificence of birds.
Please help me to make this happen. More than ever, we need to get young people excited about nature and protecting it.
