I am eager to encourage my students to read more, read better and be proud of their reading accomplishments. Competing in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition, which features Georgia Award Nominee books gives them a sense of accomplishment and recognition for academic prowess. However, we have a 100% free and reduced price luncheon population, so most of our students do not come from homes with lots of money to spend on books. The neighborhood does not have sidewalks and the closest public library is over a mile away so students can't check out books. The school library is where they get books. My students love to read, and are eager to compete but a full set of each of the competition books will cost over $180, and frankly, my students don't have the money.
