My students all have diagnoses of speech/language impairments that impede their education. Speech/Language impairments may affect various areas of communication: articulation, receptive/expressive language, voice, fluency (stuttering) and social/pragmatic language skills. These deficits often coexist with learning disabilities and/or other developmental delays. My students have the additional challenge of living in a very low-income, inner-city area where "everyday learning" opportunities are largely limited to what they are exposed to during the safety of the structured school day. In speech/language therapy sessions, my students are eager to learn, understand and verbally contribute their thoughts and ideas. However, speech difficulties, limited vocabulary knowledge and a weak command of language often inhibit their effectiveness. During therapy sessions, I aim to build students' confidence and communication skills simultaneously... always mindful that their unique messages matter.
