My 9th grade students come from a high-poverty district of downtown Los Angeles, where more than 98% are on a free or reduced lunch. As a first-year charter school, we are small and poorly funded. My students love participating in labs and get extremely excited when they learn with manipulatives, but because of our non-existent science budget we are not able to purchase the much desired equipment needed for learning. Most of my students have never been interested in science before but have voiced that they would love to dissect and have been looking forward to high school because of it. As the only science teacher at my school, it is important that I lay the foundation for my students and teach science in a fun and engaging manner. I would like to make my students' dream a reality so that they would not only learn biology but also foster a desire for learning and develop that into an interest in the sciences.
