I teach 94 "intensive" math students. This means that these 94 7th and 8th grade students take two math classes. The intensive class I teach helps students build computational fluency and literacy with Math, and strengthen their understanding of basic math operations and concepts. Without the basics, they struggle everyday to master concepts within their appropriate grade level, widening their knowledge gap. They attend a school that sometimes lacks the basic supplies that allow their peers in other communities to succeed at rates far beyond our school. A significant majority (at least 90% of students) are on free and reduced lunch. The low-income community these students live in does not allow them the same access to resources and opportunities that many of us take for granted.
