My students are voracious readers, but when it comes to independent reading, they typically choose to read narrative texts. The new Common Core State Standards place much more of an emphasis on reading informational text than our previous state standards. Students are required to use features of non-fiction text to demonstrate reading comprehension. They must identify the main idea, note supporting details, and answer questions by citing specific evidence and sources.
