The goal of Battle of the Books is simple, to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. Students are encouraged to read a variety of good books by outstanding authors of children鈥檚 literature. I was so proud and delighted that almost all twenty-five of my 5th grade students wanted to be part of the 鈥楤attle of the Books鈥 team this year. I have never had so many students be so enthusiastic about reading! Unfortunately, the official team can only be made up of 12 students from the entire grade level, so regrettably, I had some rather disappointed students.
My aim for this project is to give all my students access to these excellent titles, not just the students on the team. I want them to be able to participate even though they aren鈥檛 on our school鈥檚 team. We would have our own class 鈥榖attle鈥 where students can talk, discuss, write and draw about their books, and we would also have a lovely display when my students are able to show their self initiated work about the books. Not everyone can be a top athlete, most popular, or have the 鈥渃ool鈥 shoes. But everyone in our class can have access to the B.O.B books. My class will become champions by becoming walking, talking student advocates for reading.
Donors to this project will make my students truly delighted by having their own copy of one of the books from the competition available to them, both in school and at home, so they can enjoy reading with their classmates, teachers and families.
